BUFFS/DEBUFFS

Buffs play a large part of the end-game raid dynamic, as they have the potential to drastically raise your stats, allowing you to do better. Applying this to the entire raid group means that you'll play more effectively.

Stackable

Some buffs and debuffs can be applied several times and stack up. A little number on top of the icon will indicate how many times that buff/debuff is applied. Other abilities, however, will only let you apply them if they are more powerful than the current one.

Line-Of-Sight

When players cast a buff or debuff they need to be in their line of sight, or basically able to see that character directly. Some debuffs, however, are only active as long as the enemy has you in his line of sight. Players will need to take cover and make sure they can't see them.

Ordered By:
Buffs (needs to be ported to the wiki!)
Heal-Over-Time
usually cast by healers as an insta-cast spell, these buffs heal you slowly over a period of time. Healers find it ideal to cast these on party and raid members who aren't currently being attacked or have their life drop any lower. This effect also comes when a person uses a bandage on themself or someone else (though in that case damage breaks the effect).
Stat Increase
The majority of buffs a party can cast on each other involves raises one or more stats of that character by a certain amount, or even a certain percent. Some buffs, like Mark of the Wild, Increase all stats and all resistances, plus armor, by a certain amount. Many of these class-specific buffs are lumped into "Books" that can be found and used to learn an ability that casts it on an entire party at a time, usually at the cost of a regeant.
Damage Absorption
These buffs last a set amount of time to make you invulnerable to damage (whether it be any damage or a certain type, such as fire). They also expire earlier if the damage limit has been reached. These buffs come from abilities as well as potions.
Return Damage
Such a buff returns damage, usually in the form of a small amount of magic damage, to enemy attackers. This is especially effective with increased armor and if the enemies are many in number and attack quickly.

Debuffs (needs to be ported to the wiki!)
Damage-Over-Time
The counter to a heal-over-time, this effect damages you for small amounts over a set time. If these aren't connected to some manner of status ailment they usually can't be debuffed.
Decreased Resistance/Increased Damage
This usually applies to some form of magic, whereby your resistance to that school of magic is lowered, or perhaps those spells against you are augmented.
Stun/Slow
Not a debuff in the traditional sense, but certain there is enough abilities in existance which hinder a unit's ability to escape or act at all. Stuns render the player unable to do anything but become mad, and slow effects are often the bane of those wishing to flee the battle. Both traditionally last for a sec amount of time, and usually stuns cannot occur at the same time as each other.
Status Ailments
There are 4 types of debuffs that are dispellable. certain classes have abilities to remove these debuffs depending what type they are.
    • Poison Poisons all follow the formula of doing 'X' amount of damage over 'Y' period of time. Since they can often be applied many times, and since removing said debuffs late yields diminishing returns, some abilities that remove the debuffs attempt to remove them for an extended period of time.
    • Disease Diseases can yield any number of effects, but they usually lower your stats or positive spells against you. This can include lowering, for instance, 'stamina and spirit by 25'. It is best to remove diseases early, depending on what they are and if the raid values stats.
    • Curse Curses are varied in their effects. Some can reduce positive effects done towards you significantly, while others can deal a large amount of damage if not dispelled after a certain amount of time, while still others can summon enemies from the host. These are often the highest priority debuffs to be dispelled quickly.
    • Magic Another debuff type in which the effects are varied. Everything from mind control to fearing to magic resistance lowering can be the result of a magic debuff. Some act much like curses while others act more like diseases.
