Chance to Hit

Single Roll System

World of Warcraft uses an unusual method for rolling for combat in order to save on performance.

How it DOESN'T work:
Most people expect chance on hit to work like this:
  1. Computer rolls to see if you hit the target based on your % chance to hit
  2. If it is a hit computer calculates if it is dodged or parried
  3. If it is still a hit computer calculates if it is a critical strike
The above is completely wrong. Your chance to hit is NOT determined before chance to crit.

How it Works:
All the outcomes such as hit, miss, parry, dodge and crit are rolled in ONE single roll.

A typical breakdown might be something like:

1) You have a 10% chance to crit, and a 5% chance to miss
2) The opponent has a 5% chance to doge, 5% to parry, 5% to block and has no +defence gear to affect the swing

Assume the roll is out of 100. The breakdown of the roll would look like this:

Typical Roll Outcome Example
  • first 10: crit hit
  • next 60: hit
  • next 5: miss
  • next 5: dodge
  • next 5: parry
  • next 5: block

When WoW generates the roll out of 100, whichever number comes up is the automatic result.

+Chance to Hit Has No Effect on Crits

A common misconception is that gear with +% Chance to Hit will also give you +chance to crit. Because of the single roll system this is NOT true at all.

+hit reduces your chance to miss by "shifting" the miss amount into a hit.

So if you wear +2% to Hit gear you will have 62% chance to hit and only 3% chance to miss. Your % to crit remains complete unchanged. A roll out of 100 will now have the following results:

+2% Hit Roll Outcome
  • first 10: crit hit
  • next 62: hit
  • next 3: miss
  • next 5: dodge
  • next 5: parry
  • next 5: block

+Crit Does Not affect Misses

By the same token +Crit does not affect your miss rate. Your miss rate with +crit is the same as not wearing any +crit at all.
