World Of Warcraft

FORMULAS

Ordered By:
Chance to Hit (needs to be ported to the wiki!)

Single Roll System

World of Warcraft uses an unusual method for rolling for combat in order to save on performance. How it DOESN'T work: Most people expect chance on hit to work like this:
  1. Computer rolls to see if you hit the target based on your % chance to hit
  2. If it is a hit computer calculates if it is dodged or parried
  3. If it is still a hit computer calculates if it is a critical strike
The above is completely wrong. Your chance to hit is NOT determined before chance to crit. How it Works: All the outcomes such as hit, miss, parry, dodge and crit are rolled in ONE single roll. A typical breakdown might be something like: 1) You have a 10% chance to crit, and a 5% chance to miss 2) The opponent has a 5% chance to doge, 5% to parry, 5% to block and has no +defence gear to affect the swing Assume the roll is out of 100. The breakdown of the roll would look like this: Typical Roll Outcome Example
  • first 10: crit hit
  • next 60: hit
  • next 5: miss
  • next 5: dodge
  • next 5: parry
  • next 5: block
When WoW generates the roll out of 100, whichever number comes up is the automatic result.

+Chance to Hit Has No Effect on Crits

A common misconception is that gear with +% Chance to Hit will also give you +chance to crit. Because of the single roll system this is NOT true at all. +hit reduces your chance to miss by "shifting" the miss amount into a hit. So if you wear +2% to Hit gear you will have 62% chance to hit and only 3% chance to miss. Your % to crit remains complete unchanged. A roll out of 100 will now have the following results: +2% Hit Roll Outcome
  • first 10: crit hit
  • next 62: hit
  • next 3: miss
  • next 5: dodge
  • next 5: parry
  • next 5: block

+Crit Does Not affect Misses

By the same token +Crit does not affect your miss rate. Your miss rate with +crit is the same as not wearing any +crit at all.

Critical Strikes (needs to be ported to the wiki!)
Critical strikes cause extra damage on hit.

Melee Crits for 200% damage.

Spells Crit for 150% of base damage.

To see your melee crit percentage open up the skills panel (default "P" key), go to the general tab, and and select Melee from the dropdown menu (patch 2.0 update). Unlike before 2.0 players can now see their spell critical strike % by selecting "Spell" from the menu. It will show info related to casting such as +dmg, +healing and so on.

Each class has a different formula for base critical strike %.
